Nvidia’s RTX series GPUs might become the GPUs that finally make 4K gaming mainstream , and you might finally be able to play games such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for 4k, ultra, at least 45 FPS. The Nvidia RTX series are the first consumer gaming GPUs that can run real-time Ray Tracing, making games look a lot better and making them look more like movies. Ray Tracing is a vital part of Nvidia’s RTX GPUs thanks to Nvidia’s advertisements of this feature, but according to the latest rumors, the lower end models of RTX cards aren’t going to feature Ray Tracing.

Lower end Cards Not to Feature Ray Tracing

During a Q&A session at the Citi 2018 Global Technology Conference, ” Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said, “The cards will come out; we’ll start with the ray tracing cards. We have the 2080 Ti, the 2080, and the 2070 overall coming to market. This is a major leap regarding something that people probably weren’t expecting for another ten years to 15 years.” According to rumors, Nvidia isn’t going to enable Ray Tracing on the RTX 2060 because the GPU doesn’t have enough power to run Ray Tracing in real time.

Why Would Nvidia Disable Ray Tracing on the Lower-end RTX models?

Nvidia is going to disable Ray Tracing on the RTX 2060 and lower because it’s simply too weak. Real-time Ray Tracing takes a lot of power to do , and the RTX 2060 might not be powerful enough, so it’s just not worth it for Nvidia to work on Ray Tracing for the RTX 2060. According to speculations, the performance on the RTX 2060 would suffer too much if Nvidia enables Ray Tracing so they are going to disable it on the RTX 2060. Even if Nvidia doesn’t disable it, you will probably have to run your games at 1080p medium-low to get 60 FPS with ray tracing on. Even the RTX 2080 struggled to play games with Ray Tracing enabled at 1080p in Nvidia’s Demos. Keep in mind these are the prototypes but still, if the RTX 2080 somewhat struggles then the RTX 2060 will probably not be able to do it at all. If the RTX 2060 isn’t going to be able to run it, the lower end models are definitely not going to be able to do it.
