AMD EPYC CPUs Powering Microsoft’s Global Cloud Services – Logos
AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) recently announced that the first public global cloud system and instances made by the 32 core AMD EPYC processor are made by Microsoft. Microsoft Azure has used the AMD EPYC processors in its servers in advance for huge storage optimized workloads. The new Lv2-Series are High I/O, dense storage offerings which make EPYC perfect for Azure customers. The Lv2 VM family will take advantage of the high-core count that goes up to 32 cores and connectivity support of the AMD EPYC CPUs. The Lv2-series are made by EPYC 7000 cpu platforms from AMD. Microsoft mentioned that it has enjoyed the deep collaboration with AMD, on Microsoft’s next gen open source cloud hardware design called Microsoft’s Project Olympus. The Lv2-Series instances run on the AMD EPYC 7551 processor, with a base core frequency of 2.0 GHz to turbo frequency of 3.0 GHz. EPYC CPUs have a very high core density and high memory bandwidth and I/O capabilities. With support for 128 lanes of PCIe connections per cpu. AMD provides over 33 percent more connectivity than available two-socket solutions. The specs of the AMD EPY 7551 are: Specifications # of CPU Cores: 32, # of Threads : 64, Base Clock Speed 2GHz, Max Turbo Core Speed : 3GHz, All Core Boost Speed : 2.55GHz, Total L3 Cache : 64MB, Default TDP / TDP 180W.
This is a very good deal with Microsoft that started in SC17. In sc17 which is a show that happens annually the giants of supercomputing come together and show off their new products. AMD had a very good experience in sc17, a lot of new costumers and basically entering very strongly into the datacenter and AI hardware market. In CPU section of the AI market the main competition is between Intel with the Xeon CPUs and AMD EPYC CPUs. Both are very strong high end products that the specs numbers and core densities does not really look similar to the other portions of computer market with CPU core count like 16 to 32 and cache size of 64 to 256 MG per CPU. EPYC has replaced the old AMD series Optron in this market and is showing off very strongly.
