Nvidia Gaming Revenue Down 45% Due to AMD Navi

Here is Why Nvidia Hasn’t been Doing That Well

Nvidia has released their earnings for Q4 FY19 and they beat everyone’s expectations but, they have also posted their gaming revenue which dropped by 45% from last year.

Nvidia Overestimated the mining market

When cryptocurrencies blew up a while back and people started buying hundreds of GPUs for mining cryptocurrencies such as ethereum, Nvidia made a lot of money and quickly started making GPUs for mining. Nvidia greatly overestimated the mining market and overproduced pascal cards. When cryptocurrency prices fell, Nvidia was left with a lot of extra Pascal GPUs that couldn’t be used for gaming. Even in February 2019, Nvidia is still sitting on a lot of extra GP106 GPUs which are basically GTX 1060 cards. The worst part for Nvidia is the fact that nothing can be done about the mining GPUs. Miners don’t want them and gamers can’t use them as a result, Nvidia wasted a lot of money making GPUs that can’t be sold or recycled as they’re based on last-gen cards. This combined with low RTX sales, Nvidia’s gaming revenue dropped by 45%.

Nvidia RTX Not Doing Well

Nvidia’s latest GPU series, RTX hasn’t been that popular amongst PC gamers and enthusiasts. The Nvidia RTX 2080, the successor to the GTX 1080TI starts from $800 while the 1080TI started from $700. If you compare the RTX 2080 to the GTX 1080 TI which approximately cost the same price, you’ll see that the RTX 2080 only offers about 10% of performance gain in gaming benchmarks. Usually, next-gen GPUs perform at least 30% better than their equivalent last-gen cards so, RTX is pretty disappointing.

AMD Navi Rumors Hurt Nvidia

The latest rumors have been claiming that AMD Navi is going to be released sometime in October instead of the originally rumored summer release date. AMD Navi was spotted in MacOs a while back and, it shows that Navi is probably going to be released soon. Just like previous rumors, three variants of Navi were found in MacOs but, they had different names then the original ones we got a few months ago. AMD Navi isn’t exactly worth it for the price so, many gamers are waiting to see what AMD is going to do with Navi.
