The State of Virtual Reality in 2018
In 2015, a significant portion of the tech community claimed that virtual reality would be the future of video gaming. The new technology showed a lot of promise over the past years and has definitely opened up opportunities, not just for the video game industry but for other fields as well. But considering that virtual reality has already been around for a while now, does the prediction still hold up?
2017 AND VIRTUAL REALITY
Let’s review virtual reality’s performance last year. Industry analyst Anshel Sag shares that consumer VR is slowly maturing, with the PlayStation VR taking the lead in sales. Sony already successfully shipped over 2 million units, but while it’s an impressive figure, the company still has a long way to go considering it has sold over 70 million PlayStation 4 consoles. Meanwhile, the numbers for Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are steadily climbing as well, largely due to their price drops and bundled packages. Even so, they aren’t selling as fast as companies hoped.
With the way things are going, many have lost confidence in the future of VR. A Mashable report detailed a recent survey about VR and mentioned that over 29% of game developers believe it isn’t a sustainable business. This means that those who have ventured into creating VR games don’t expect to be investing in it much longer. Despite the loss of faith for some, there are a great number of VR gems that have been released. Some of the best-selling VR games on Steam include Job Simulator, Gorn, Onward , Raw Data, and Google’s Tilt Brush. Other titles listed on the charts are VR-compatible versions of already successful games such as Fallout 4 and Superhot. Fallout VR made the highest sales with $4,731,120, most likely because it was included in the HTC Vive bundle.

Perhaps VR has yet to fully develop before we finally see significant changes. Judging by the industry’s pace, it doesn’t seem to be significantly dipping or increasing. It remains relevant, especially in the world of video games. TechCrunch suggests that VR is more than just hype because it will always have that wow factor. It could generate excitement in various business sectors and investor circles. It can be used in tourism, real estate, and even health care.
VR has a lot of potential for social experiences, too. Lottoland points out that social interaction is important to keep users engaged. In fact, VRChat is one such title that’s already gaining attention, albeit for reasons other than the tech innovation. If you have ever heard of the Ugandan Knuckles meme, you’ll know what we’re talking about. Jokes aside, apps such as VRChat could jumpstart a whole new type of social networking should they do well in sales.
It’s uncertain how VR will do this 2018, but it’s best to keep an open mind about its capabilities. Fad or not, there are a lot of things you can do with the tech. It’s always exciting to discover new VR games that would require the use of other mechanics, such as touch responses or voice-activated commands. For more VR news, visit Ultra GamerZ’ VR section.
